Elcap Youth Project
Easington
Lane Community Access Point saw the start of their brand new era. We were
successful in winning the tender from Sunderland Youth Development Group
to manage the youth work in the South of the City. We also managed to
secure funding from URBAN II to fund two youth managers to manage the
project due to the size of the area. The project was named Elcap Youth
Project and focuses on reaching young people and informally educating
them through music, art and drama.
NEWS
Young people can now access the SHOWT card scheme and also access Chlamydia

Christmas
2006 saw a brand new approach to breaking down barriers within geographical
areas and bringing young people together who have the same interests
and common goals...Music and Mc-ing. A Mc night was held in aid of raising
funds for the Community Christmas Memorial tree in High Street Easington
Lane. Groups of young people from Murton, Hetton and Easington Lane
met up and performed to an audience of 120 young people. It was a well
supervised and very well presented activity and young people have asked
for it to be an annual event

The Duke
of Edinburgh Award has been running for 2 years. Youth Workers do a
weekly drop-in at hetton School where they meet and support young people
through their award. Young people also participate in team building
excercises and are responsibile for putting together their own ground
rules.

With the
support from EDF Energy and the 'Helping Hands Teams' the front of the
building has been re-decorated and looks the picture of health again.
During sessions at Flatts youth Centre young people have the opportunitiy
to participate in a wide range of activities from playing drums, pool
room, mc-ing and playing and listening to the decks.

 |
A
chocolate consultation was held in order to gain recommendations
from young people for the “Way Forward”. Young people
were asked questions on how they would like to develop their youth
facilities what activities they would like to participate in. From
the consultation a number of young people formed a group and applied
to Sunderland’s Youth Development Groups YOUTH OPPORTUNITY
FUND and managed to secure £23,583.60 to upgrade The Flatts
Youth Centre and turn it into a Cyber Cafe. |
| |
|
 |
From
the Funds secured the computer room has had 10 new computers fitted
with access to internet. Homework clubs are running weekly with
members having to share computers as to the high demand of the popularity
of the suite. Young people can also participate in the Driving Theory
programme as software has been installed on computers. |
| |
|
 |
Young
people managed to budget well with their funds and were able to
have a total new fitted kitchen installed upstairs in the Youth
Centre. Young people now have access to learning and developing
new and existing skills with regards to Healthy food options and
how to cook on a budget. They are currently running their own Tuck
Shop and Snack Bar with all profits being put back into their sessions. |
| |
|
 |
The
Decks room has been re-decorated and lighting and disco balls fitted
which all adds to the atmosphere the young people are aiming for
and can relax in. This is the most popular room on an evening session
where young people Mc or Mix music and take way with them at the
end of the session their own personalised ring tone for their mobile
phones. |
| |
|
 |
The
pool table has been recovered and new flooring put down to give
a more enhanced feel to the game. This room is used more by young
people wanting to have discussions and conversations while relaxing
in a calmer and quieter environment. |
