WHO OR WHAT IS ELCAP?
  • Easington Lane Community Access Point

  • A local charitable organisation run by local people for local people

  • We provide training and educational opportunities, childcare and support – free of charge.

  • We are available to everyone in the Sunderland Coalfields and URBAN II areas.

  • We work in partnership with many other organisations

  • The principal aim of the project is to provide a Community Access Point that will create much needed facilities in a run-down former mining community. In particular we will focus on introducing local people to opportunities in education, training, primary health and social facilities.

Project managers report

We pride ourselves in the delivery of quality services for the community such as our area based youth service, Elcap Youth Project, community transport Driving Force Project, Crèche and Training Programme.

The team here at ELCAP consists of a 15 strong locally elected Board of Directors and a staff team of 22 strengthening our Ethos “Run by Local People for Local People”.

Our links with Social Enterprise Sunderland has resulted I many local people receiving Information Advice & Guidance around setting up businesses. Project Worker Bill Robinson meets with such clients within our centre thus identifying the need for our next exciting adventure “ELCAP Sub Stations” creating purpose built low cost workshop accommodation in which new businesses can grow, encouraging a culture of enterprise within our establishment and partner projects.

We can celebrate the many success stories of local people who have experienced training opportunities, some life changing leading to employment.

We have to pay tribute to our many funders who support us financially. We are determined to ensure the sustainability of ELCAP – that’s why we are pro-active in helping to identify suitable funding streams. From October 2005 – September 2006 ELCAP attracted £357,281 from 17 different funding streams. Biggest contributors were the Big Lottery (£92,748), Tyne & Wear Included Communities Fund Community Foundation (£55,000) and URBAN II (£125,079) for their manager’s salary for three years. We continue to work in partnership with the local Sure Start Children’s Centres delivering a wide range of services including the Child Safety First. Last but not least a big thank you to the team who contribute to the success of the project, their hard work and commitment is outstanding. Also a special mention to all our volunteers, their contribution is invaluable.
